Coffee Wood Marble is a natural marble from Guizhou Province in southwest China, quarried in a belt of wood-grain marbles. Its figure runs in straight parallel lines like timber grain, which is why it is sold as an alternative to wood cladding in hotel and commercial interiors.
They are the same material sold under two names. Obama Wood Marble and Coffee Wood Marble both refer to the Guizhou wood-grain marble. The name a supplier uses on his listing tells you nothing about the rock, which is why a block number is the only reliable identifier.
It is stone — a natural marble. The figure runs in straight parallel lines like timber grain, and that resemblance is the whole commercial argument for it. It behaves as marble: it is cut, polished and fixed like a stone, and it is calcium carbonate.
Look at three things: the base colour, the spacing of the lines, and whether the figure stays straight over a long run. Coffee wood is a warm grey-brown with close, evenly spaced straight lines. Grey wood grain is cooler and flatter; white wood grain is pale; pinghua has a wavy, cloud-like figure instead of lines.
Because of its colour and its figure together: a coffee-brown base with straight lines running across it, which reads as a wood-grain board. The name is a trade description of the look, not a geological classification.
There can be. "Guizhou wood grain marble" is a family name covering several beds, and coffee wood grain is one of them. A supplier quoting the family name may be quoting a different bed from yours, at a different price and a different colour.
Because these are descriptive names, and the trade has always named stone by its look. Pinghua means a flat, even figure in Chinese; wood grain and coffee wood are the same kind of description in English. A name narrows a family, it does not identify a bed.
Because the name travels with the export trade rather than with the geology. Several exporters list this material under Obama Wood Marble and several under Coffee Wood Marble, and they are the same Guizhou stone. The name a buyer searches is not the name on the invoice.
It is the same bed and the same stone, and a slab will not repeat exactly. The photographs are of the actual installation, and the block it came from is named in the case article.
