What are the practical differences between Coffee Wood Marble and a wood-grain porcelain?

The stone is quarried and the porcelain is fired, and everything practical follows from that: the figure is unique and printed porcelain repeats; the stone etches and porcelain does not; a stone panel can be repaired in place and a porcelain tile can be replaced.
Three polished stone slabs standing upright in timber frames, wrapped in clear plastic, side by side in a workshop. The faces are a flat grey-brown with fine straight parallel lines running across them, and the overhead lights reflect in long streaks along the polish.
Three slabs standing side by side. The straight parallel figure is what separates this stone from the dramatic veined marbles.
Application image, a design render rather than a photograph. A reception floor with a full-height stone backdrop behind the desk, the counter itself in the same stone, and concealed lighting washing down the wall from above.
The reception at the Qingyi River Hotel, where this stone is the wall behind the desk.

Reference photographs. They show the material and the finish; they are not photographs of goods we made, and the colour on screen is not a colour-match.

The figures, and where each one comes from

Coffee Wood Marble Wood-grain porcelain
Origin Quarried in Guizhou, cut and polished Fired clay body with a printed face
The figure Unique to the block Repeats across the floor
Water Absorbs slightly, and is sealed Does not absorb
Acid Etches Safe
Edge Sawn or profiled, and it is the cost Moulded
The argument for it The figure is the point It is cheaper and it is easier to live with

Why it behaves the way it does

The most useful way to put it is that porcelain is the answer to a maintenance brief and this stone is the answer to a design brief. A client who cannot decide between them usually has one of the two briefs and has not noticed which.

What these figures are, and what they are not

We supply the marble. This page is not a comparison of our product against another supplier's, and we do not publish figures for anybody else's material.

If you are specifying this
