Moulding, Cornice and Skirting

The profiled section that finishes a wall — skirting, cornice, architrave
Cut and finished from Coffee Wood Marble at our own processing base. Typical specification: A moulding is a section, and the section is what a template is cut from. The profile is chosen first — the ogee and the cyma are different templates, not different thicknesses — and the length is cut to the wall run rather than to a catalogue length, so the joint lands where the run changes. The stone is 18 mm or 20 mm for a skirting, and 30 mm for a cornice that projects.

Moulding, Cornice and Skirting, explained

On this stone Made to order, and the block decides. Ask before you specify it.

The decision you are making

A moulding is a section, and the section is what a template is cut from.

What it looks like

A narrow band of the stone with the grain running along it, which is why the figure has to be chosen rather than accepted: a moulding takes a thin slice across the bed, and the slice decides what it looks like.

Where it is the right answer

Finishing a clad wall, a stair, a shopfront, and anywhere a wall meets the floor or the ceiling and the joint needs to be covered.

On Coffee Wood Marble

A moulding takes the thinnest cut of any form on this site, and the pattern of the bed runs across the section — so the colour of a moulding is the colour of a narrow band, and a buyer who wants the dark vein to read should ask for the piece to be selected for it.

Not the same form

The flat inlay strip that goes into a floor is a border, not a moulding: it is the same trade word for a different cut. The border is on its own page.

The specifications on these pages are the published supplier and trade-platform figures for Guizhou Coffee Wood Marble, and the decisions each form carries are our own reading of how this material behaves in that job. We have not run a slip test, an abrasion test or a weathering test on any of them. A floor, a path or an external threshold specified for slip resistance needs the tested wet-DCOF figure for the stone and the finish, which we will supply on request.

The stone, in photographs

Where each photograph was taken is written under it — the quarry yard, the sawing line, the polishing line, the packing bay, or a floor and a wall already laid with this stone.
