Cobble and Sett

The small hand-laid paving unit, cut from slab offcut
Cut and finished from Coffee Wood Marble at our own processing base. Typical specification: A cobble is a small unit, and the decision is how it is made. Hand-cut setts are sawn and then dressed by hand, so the top face is not perfectly flat and the light breaks on each one; machine-cut setts are sawn to a module and are uniform, which reads as a floor rather than as stone. The thickness is 30 mm to 50 mm for a laid path, and the material for a cobbled path comes from slab offcut rather than from a block, which is what makes it affordable.

Cobble and Sett, explained

On this stone Made to order, and the block decides. Ask before you specify it.

The decision you are making

A cobble is a small unit, and the decision is how it is made.

What it looks like

Small pieces of a brown stone, each one showing a slice of the bed. The uniformity of the colour is the thing a buyer checks, because a path is read as a field of many small faces at once.

Where it is the right answer

Paths, courtyards, garden edging and the surface of a terrace where a laid texture is wanted.

On Coffee Wood Marble

This form is usually a granite trade, and this is a marble: it takes a honed or tumbled face and it is not a non-slip surface, so a path specified wet needs the tested figure. We say so on the page rather than selling a polished marble setts as if it were a granite one.

The specifications on these pages are the published supplier and trade-platform figures for Guizhou Coffee Wood Marble, and the decisions each form carries are our own reading of how this material behaves in that job. We have not run a slip test, an abrasion test or a weathering test on any of them. A floor, a path or an external threshold specified for slip resistance needs the tested wet-DCOF figure for the stone and the finish, which we will supply on request.
