The surface on this page has not been photographed on this stone yet, so these are photographs of the stone itself. Ask for a sample of the surface and we will send one.
Photographs of this stone. The colour on screen is not a colour match.
The surface is worked by hand with a chisel or an axe, producing dense, irregular linear grooves. Also called an axe finish or, for the denser pattern, a dragon-eye face.
Strong linear relief. Every piece is different, because the tool was worked by hand.
Feature walls, landscape and garden steps, exterior cladding, and walls where the texture itself is the design.
A chisel follows the bed, and this stone has a strong, straight bed — which means the marks can be run with the vein instead of across it. That is worth having. It is labour-intensive and the yield is lower, so it is a made-to-order surface.
chisel · chiseled finish · axed · axe cut · axe finish · hand chiselled · dragon eye
The processes above are the trade's descriptions of these finishes. Whether a finish suits this stone is our reading of how a calcite marble behaves under it — we have not run a slip or abrasion test on any of these surfaces, and a floor specification needs the tested wet-DCOF figure for the stone and the finish, which we will supply on request.
