Acid Washed, explained

On this stone Made to order, and the block decides. Ask before you specify it.

How the surface is made

The surface is treated with a dilute acid, which etches the calcite and leaves a finely pitted, matte texture. It tones down glossiness and gives the stone a naturally aged, rustic character.

What it does to the stone

Matte and slightly rough, with a muted colour and a softer, weathered reading of the vein.

Where it is the right answer

Mediterranean and rustic interiors, outdoor terraces, garden paths, and façades where a gloss surface would be wrong.

On Coffee Wood Marble

Workable on this stone, and it is a large-format marble, so the etching reads at slab scale rather than as a fine grain. The acid dulls the polish, so a honed surface is the starting point it should be asked from, not a polished one. Do not specify it for a wet room floor without asking for the slip figure.

The processes above are the trade's descriptions of these finishes. Whether a finish suits this stone is our reading of how a calcite marble behaves under it — we have not run a slip or abrasion test on any of these surfaces, and a floor specification needs the tested wet-DCOF figure for the stone and the finish, which we will supply on request.
